A graduate of the Booker High School VPA Theatre program herself (class of 1992), Ms. Abrahamson is serving her 17th year on the BHS VPA staff.
Before joining the BHS team, Ms. Abrahamson earned her Bachelor’s Degree in English literature from Florida State University, graduating Magna Cum Laude; and her Master’s Degree in Mass Communications specializing in Print Journalism from The University of Florida. Since beginning her teaching career, she has been on adjunct faculty at Manatee Community College, teaching journalism, mass communications, and popular culture, as well as advising the college’s award-winning newspaper, The Lance.
As VPA Coordinator, Ms. Abrahamson’s role is acting as a liaison between teachers, parents, and students, recruiting prospective students from the community, and marketing the VPA mission and events throughout Sarasota. She supports VPA teachers in curriculum and development, and is responsible for chairing the VPA Department at the school. Additionally, she teaches English language arts in the Cambridge University AICE Diploma program; 2018-19 is her 6th year teaching AICE General Paper.
Ms. Abrahamson has twice been named a Florida High Impact teacher (2015-16 and 2016-17), based on her ability to effect student growth in ELA as measured by the Florida Standards Assessment; she was also Booker High School’s Teacher of the Year for the 2017-18 school year.
